Calculating Online Slot Probabilities

As with any other casino game, slots are a gamble. In order to win, you need to make sure that the odds are in your favour. If the odds are not in your favour, why even bother playing?

The probability of slots is calculated in order to get an indication of what your odds are of winning at a specific slot. Find below a short introduction on what probability is, and how it is calculated when you play at

What Is Slot Probability?

The probability of something refers to how likely it is to happen. This is usually calculated in a fraction or percentage. Slot probability thus refers to your odds of winning at a particular slot.

Calculating Your Odds Based On Symbols and Reels

There are a number of factors that could influence your odds of winning at online slots. One of these is the number of reels and symbols that the slot of interest has. To calculate your odds based on the number of reels and symbols, you will need to know how many winning combinations the slot has, how much these combinations pay out as well as the probability of landing these combinations.

The number of winning combinations and how much they pay out are presented in the paytable of the slot, but how do we calculate the probability?

Let’s use the example of the simplest most traditional slot. In this example the slot has 3 reels, 3 rows and just five symbols. Symbols include sevens, bars, grapes, a bell and a cherry. To hit the jackpot you need to land three bells across the reels. So now you want to calculate the probability of landing three bells.

Since the example slot has only 45 stops, the probability is calculated as follows :(1/45) x (1/45) x (1/45) = 0.001%. Your odds are thus 0.001% for landing three bells.

However, there are also other factors that may influence your odds of winning.

Payback Odds

When players want to determine their odds of winning, they often look at the Return to Player percentage of a particular slot, and choose their slots based on that. The Return to Player percentage tells you how much of your total wagers you will get back over time. You do not need to calculate your odds in terms of RTP; you will find them when you research a specific slot. However, keep in mind that the Return to Player percentages are calculated over the lifetime of the machines. They do not apply for a slot that you only play once.

Random Number Odds

Modern online slots are operated by Random Number Generators. Each symbol in that slot corresponds to a random number generated by the Random Number Generator. If the random numbers generated correspond to a winning combination then you win. So in order to calculate your odds of winning, you would need to know how many possible random number combinations there are in that slot. To do this you would need to use a computer and also have all the relevant information.
